The Flying Jenny

The Flying Jenny carousel

A favorite place for young men to bring their young lady friends for some courting, the Flying Jenny was one of the first carousels. It was powered, not by electricity but by mule power! The mule would have been hitched to the center pole of the carousel, which she would walk round and round, causing the swings to go round and round, too. The mule usually was a female, called a jenny, hence the nickname for this type of carousel.
